Crazy for Coconut Oil

I'm totally, completely obsessed and in love with coconut oil! I use it in the kitchen while cooking and baking and it's one of my go-to beauty products...hmmm and the smell of coconuts, it's absolutely divine! I immediately go to my happy place...a beautiful white sand beach, sunshine, warm air, salty ocean water....okay you get the drift. It's a beautiful 20 degrees celsius here in Oakville today, so I can't complain. Okay back to coconuts hehe.....

Here are some fabulous reasons why I'm alllll about coconut oil. 

Heart Health

Coconut oil is rich in medium chain triglycerides (fatty acids). Okay so you may be wondering what that even means? They are a healthy form of saturated fat. Yes you read that correctly. Coconut oil helps in lowering your risk of heart disease, as it contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in actively preventing various heart problems like high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. It reduces the incidence of injury and damage to arteries and this decreases the risk of heart disease.

Coconut oil helps in controlling blood sugar, and protects against insulin resistance, which can reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. It also promotes the effective utilization of blood glucose and this aids in preventing and treating diabetes. The fats in coconut oil are small enough to be absorbed into the cells where they're quickly converted to energy. This not only reduces the amount of fat we pack into storage, but improves insulin sensitivity.

digestion

Poor digestion is a pretty common health issue, whether you know you have it or not. Coconut oil is a great addition to your diet if you suffer from poor digestion and all of the side effects that come along with it including bloating. Fatty acids in coconut oil contain anti-microbial properties, which have a soothing affect on bacteria, candida, or parasites that cause poor digestion. Coconut oil also aids in the absorption of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids. 

Weight Loss

The medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil can help in getting rid of excess weight. Coconut oil is easy to digest and and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and endocrine system. And the benefits for weight loss continue...it increases the body’s metabolic rate and boosts metabolism.

IMMUNITY

As I mentioned, coconut oil is comprised of almost 50% of the fatty acid called lauric acid. It also contains caprylic acid and capric acid which contain antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral properties that boost the immune system. The body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which can help treat bacteria, viruses and infections.

Skin Care

Coconut oil is an amazing skin care product! It really is one of my favourite beauty products for both myself and my girls. It can be used as a full body moisturizer, eye make-up remover, diaper ointment for babies, shaving cream, lip balm, oil for dry cuticles and the list goes on and on. It really does improve the appearance of your skin and gives you a beautiful glow, it's affordable and it smells amazing! 

Hair CARE

Coconut oil is one of the best natural ingredients for hair. Personally, I find it a bit too oily for my liking but I know it's loved by many. I do use it as a gel sometimes, to tame any flyaways. I used it a lot in the humidity on my last vacation to Turks and Caicos. Who needs gel when you have coconut oil?! It's also a great hair care oil and conditioner. But beware, it is oily (no surprise), so take proper care in rinsing it out thoroughly. 


Shelli's Coconut tips

  • When buying coconut oil, look for organic, virgin coconut oil. This is one of the best varieties of coconut oil so look for those keywords! 

  • Try eating 1 tablespoon of coconut oil daily. I mean just literally scoop out a tablespoon and eat it...it's a bit difficult to stomach at first so if you can't do it, then at least start incorporating into your food. :)

  • You can add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to your smoothies. My Fabulously Green Smoothie recipe has coconut oil...yummm!

  • Try cooking and baking with coconut oil! Cooking with coconut oil is great since it has such a high smoke point, or burning point. This means that you can cook at higher temperatures without burning the oil and damaging it’s properties. 

  • Coconut oil is a great base when cooking eggs, stir frys and other similar dishes and t's a great substitute for butter in most baking recipes. 

 A tablespoon of coconut oil per day...goes a very long and healthy way! :)
