To juice or to blend?...that is the question of the hour! Juices and smoothies are completely different and I think there is a lot of confusion between the two. I'm sure you are wondering which one is better. The answer is BOTH depending on the moment...that's my personal rule of thumb! Here's a quick and easy breakdown of the differences between juices and smoothies...
Juices & Juicing
A juice is the liquid of a plant, with all of the fiber removed. Juicing is the process of extracting all of the juice from fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. One of the main reasons to juice is to increase your intake of fresh produce because juices supply your body with an abundance of vitamins and minerals. Since the fiber is removed, it is easier for your body to absorb and digest the nutrients. So instead of eating 3-4 beets or 4 cups of spinach in one sitting, you can juice these and enjoy them in a liquid form. Juices are cleansing and detoxifying and leave you feeling light and full of energy.
To make juices, you need a juicer/juicing machine. Truthfully they are pricey but definitely worth every penny. Oh wait we don't have pennies anymore. Worth every dollar! They are powerful and amazing machines but they are also very time-consuming to clean. You also require A LOT of fruit and vegetables to make a glass of juice. I have a Breville juicer and while I love it, I don't use it nearly as much as my blender.
Jas and I did a 3-day juice fast at the beginning of January and it was absolutely amazing, challenging, rejuvenating and eye-opening. I will share the details about this juice fast in a coming blog post! And stay tuned for some amazing juice recipes!
Smoothies & Blending
Smoothies are similar to juices, as they allow you to drink your fruits and vegetables. The main difference is that smoothies consist of the entire fruit or vegetable and this includes all of the fiber. Smoothies include a greater variety of ingredients (seeds, nuts, protein powder...to name a few) and have a thicker consistency. Because of the fiber content, smoothies are more filling and can be used as a meal replacement. Fiber plays a BIG role in optimal health. So much of our nourishment depends on the healthy passage of food through out digestive tract. Without fiber, it is impossible to for balanced digestion to occur. Smoothies are filling, delicious and nourishing. And they are so much fun to make and be creative with.
To make smoothies, you need a blender. I have to name drop the Vitamix again. It's pricey but probably one of the best purchases you will make, to add to your kitchen appliance collection. There are many other blenders on the market but this is the only powerful one I have personally used.

There are tons of amazing benefits to drinking juices and smoothies. If you are just starting out and don't have a juicer or blender, I would suggest a blender. In my opinion, it's less daunting and less of a time commitment. However, if you are looking for something to aid in detoxification and cleansing, a juicer might be what you need at this moment.
It's honestly a matter of preference and what you are looking to get out of it. In the end, you are nourishing your body with all sorts of fabulous nutrients so juice or smoothie...you are making a great move towards optimal health. :)
JUICING & BLENDING TIPS:
Use a variety of fruits and vegetables when making juices or smoothies. This will maximize the different vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients your body receives.
Fruits are amazing in juices and smoothies but easy on the fruits, as they are higher in sugar.
- Drink your juice or smoothie within 10-15 minutes to avoid destroying the nutrients.
