Okay so I'm sure you have heard about all of these different diet types. Paleo..raw...vegan...just to name a few! By 'diet', I mean what you eat on a regular day-to-day basis. I'm not referring to the type of fad diet you use to lose weight before going back to what you usually eat. Don't get me started on fad diets...I'm definitely not a proponent of those. However, no matter what diet or food lifestyle you adhere to, I'm totally not here to judge. As I venture along in my amazing journey to becoming a holistic nutritionist, I'm continuing to learn and I want to share that with you.
I'm going to briefly talk about some diet types below and each week I will write a more detailed blog post on one and share some amazing recipes with you, so stay tuned!
Omnivorous: This diet is one in which both animal and vegetable foods are consumed. Most people of the world are omnivorous and this type of diet is the easiest to balance, as there are no limitations.
Vegetarian: This diet excludes meat, poultry or fish and there are varying forms of vegetarianism.
Lacto-ovo Vegetarian: This is the most common of the vegetarian diets. It doesn't include animal flesh but includes dairy and eggs.
Lacto Vegetarian: This vegetarian diet doesn't include animal flesh and eggs. This type of vegetarian eats dairy.
Vegan: This is the strictest and purest form of vegetarianism. No animal products are eaten. Only fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds are consumed.
Paleolithic: This is most commonly known as the paleo diet or the "caveman diet". It is based on on the ancient, evolutionary eating patterns of the hunter-gatherer. It includes lean meat, fish, vegetables and some fruits. This diet excludes dairy, grain, legumes and processed foods.
Raw: This type of diet consists of fresh, whole, unrefined, living, plant-based foods: fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, which are consumed in their natural state, without cooking or steaming.
Personally, I don't follow one strict diet but I definitely like to change things up. I love incorporating different diet types into my day-to-day eating. I have really cut down on my meat and poultry intake and I'm starting to lean more towards a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet but I'm not completely there yet. I also love raw foods and my dehydrator is my best friend. Anyone who knows me well knows my obsession with salad. I could literally eat salad every day for the rest of my life and be completely happy and content. I also enjoy paleo baking...it's sooo much fun. And who doesn't enjoy a delicious and unique vegan meal a couple of times a week. I'm so excited to share some delicious, healthy and interesting recipes with you from all of these different diets.
No matter what your diet consists of just remember the importance of eating a diet that consists of quality ingredients, organic and whole foods, locally grown foods (when possible) and nutrient dense foods.
